Terrapin Education

University of Portsmouth

When the University of Portsmouth needed a new purpose-built laboratory and classroom building just a few yards from the sea, Terrapin had to overcome extreme coastal weather conditions during construction and ensure the external envelope would withstand these conditions for many years.

The University’s Institute of Marine Sciences is located at the mouth of Langstone Harbour, about 3 miles from the main campus. The new building, which joins similar units already at the Institute, was designed, manufactured and constructed by Terrapin using MMC technologies.

The new building was required due to the increase in the popularity of Marine Science courses. It comprises two storeys, providing a total floor area of 444 sq m; the ground floor mainly the teaching laboratory and the first floor the lecture and seminar area.

Externally, its specifications requested for it to be similar in appearance to existing buildings and Terrapin achieved this.

The building will extend the Institute’s facilities, which, due to its location provides excellent opportunities to study the impact of human activities on coastal and marine environments.
