Growing numbers for a popular vocational course sparked an urgent need for additional teaching space at North East Surrey College of Technology (Nescot). Terrapin was drafted in at short notice by building surveyors Chawton Hill Associates to deliver quality new facilities in record time for the new term. Terrapin’s solution for the 262 sq m single storey structure was built around its Unitrex 'flat-pack-building' system, with factory built panels quickly assembled on site to create two large teaching areas.

Nescot’s campus at Epsom, Surrey, offers a wide range of Further and Higher Education courses attracting local, national and international students. A sharp rise in the intake of would-be painters and decorators at the start of the 2008/9 academic year meant the college had to find a rapid solution to its space needs. Terrapin had just six weeks overall - including only three weeks on site - to deliver a solution, ready for students and staff to move in.

Mark Belton, Contract Administrator at Chawton Hill Associates says: “Very few suppliers could have met the challenge of such tight deadlines. We were confident that Terrapin would deliver - and the results showed that our confidence was well founded.”

Terrapin Project Manager Andy Baker says the company’s Milton Keynes factory moved into top gear to produce the flat panels for the building. “Our team started foundation work on site at Epsom on 11 August and the panels were delivered for us to start assembly on 16th August. The completed building was handed over on 28th August,” he says.

The building consists of two air conditioned open plan teaching areas with a central lobby and stores. The teaching areas have teaching booths with MF ceilings round the perimeter, allowing students to practise their decorating skills.
