Terrapin Education

Hillingdon Borough Council

Due to continued expansion of the schools in its borough, Hillingdon Borough Council in London needed one single and five double classrooms for six of its schools. These modular classrooms were supplied by Terrapin over the course of a year starting with Glebe Primary School in 2009 and culminating in the delivery of Pinkwell School's new classroom two days ahead of schedule.

There was restricted access at several of the schools, and the time on site was limited. Terrapin's Unitrex system was the perfect solution as the standardised system components are delivered to the site in flat-pack form. The lightweight components are fabricated in a quality-assured factory, and assembled on site. After delivery to site it takes a mere three days to create a weathertight seal.

Graham Davies from Hillingdon Borough Council, said: "We are delighted with the new classroom buildings supplied by Terrapin, which are an affordable way of supplying extra capacity for the schools. We have been impressed with both the design of the buildings and the build schedule that Terrapin have worked to. The classrooms feature a high specification and will provide all the schools with a modern, energy efficient learning environment."

Managing Director of Terrapin, explains: "We have extensive experience in supplying this type of construction to schools across the country. The end result is a series of classroom buildings that meet with performance, aesthetic and budgetary requirements. We are delighted to have been able to work with these schools using our highly sophisticated Unitrex solution that we have developed over many years. One of the benefits is that green technologies, like heat pumps can also be incorporated into the design, and this is an area where we are seeing a growth in demand."

The classrooms included WC facilities installed by Terrapin, and Strata Board cladding to the exterior that complements its surroundings. The structure consists of a suspended timber floor, plus solid timber laminated beams and supporting timber roof joints, warm roof decking and thermal insulation. Additional sound insulation was provided by mineral wool, and for added protection aluminium windows with an integral security blind were fitted. Insulation to walls, floors and roof meets the latest requirements of Approved Document L of building regulations. A ramped approach and low threshold entrance door provides for disabled access in accordance with Document M.

Terrapin's ability to offer the client a simple 'one stop shop' solution was a major factor in Hillingdon Borough Council choosing them for this build, as well as the adaptability of the Unitrex panellised system which can provide bespoke solutions.
