Deadlines and Difficulties Tackled Head-On

Restricted site access and a tight deadline were never going to be a problem when Terrapin was appointed to create a permanent double storey classroom extension at Hastings High School in Leicestershire.

As the UK’s leading offsite construction experts, we successfully overcame the challenges of a very narrow single lane access road and a five day deadline by supplying its innovative Unitrex panellised off-site construction system

Traditional builds would have faced severe problems when attempting to overcome the tight timeframe, almost inaccessible site and severe weather, and work would have inevitably have been forced to stop on-site. Terrapin's off-site construction methods, however, made for a problem-free, efficient build, staying on schedule.

“We have been extremely impressed with the Unitrex system from Terrapin as it overcame the site access issues, as well as meeting our very demanding timescales,” said Pete Tilbury, Finance Manager at Hastings High School. “The company’s skill in off-site construction meant the new classrooms were completed on time and we have been delighted with the very high standard of the build and thermal efficiency it offers.”

The Unitrex system was able to create the large clear-span rooms required by the school, for example, in the 178 sq m main hall. Unitrex eliminates the need for internal supporting walls, which makes significant savings on additional foundations and helps to reduce the carbon footprint of the development. This unique lightweight construction method is a fundamental part of Terrapin’s approach, which also means fewer deliveries to site and reduced traffic in the local area to minimise disruption to residents.

Seamless Integration

Terrapin’s expertise in projects of this type, as well as the adaptability of the Unitrex panellised system, meant that the company was able to link the new classroom to the existing building at the same finished floor level. This was essential to avoid any unnecessary steps or slopes, ensuring a seamless link between the existing and new classrooms. Externally, both buildings were again matched by re-rendering – making the new classrooms indistinguishable from the traditional built main structure. A ramped approach and low threshold entrance door provides for disabled access.

Managing Director of Terrapin, explains: “We offer complete flexibility and bespoke capabilities to suit the project needs, which was essential at Hastings High School. We were delighted to be able to overcome the issues on-site and deliver a workable building within the given timeframe. It is our unique and versatile product range which allows us to do this, combined with our 60 years of expertise in this area.”
